Annabelle: Creation Comes Home

Furthermore, there’s a tenderness here that we don’t see a lot of in movies of this nature. Case in point, a cute little crush between Mary and Bob that doesn’t end in the prerequisite booty call you might be expecting. It’s refreshing to see puppy love displayed in such a tender and sweet-natured way. If you’re already thinking that this sounds like overkill, you are right.

There are seriously evil items at play too, like an old board game called Feely Meely, which requires players to place their hands inside and fish around for trinkets, and a TV that shows events happening moments before they occur in real life. Annabelle, treated more like a ringleader here than a personality with some history that the last movies have dug into, gets in on the action too, with some of the more sinister scares causing me to audibly shout “Oh god! Or better yet, cut to McKenna Grace looking worried, since the underage actor has an uncanny knack for communicating a beyond-her-years sense of dread. No stranger to the supernatural — she was a flashback regular on Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House — she gives the Warrens’ daughter an intelligence and apprehensiveness that feels leagues above your typical scream-queen-in-training performance. Grace makes being in a state of perpetual uneasiness seem effortless.

I started Smash Cut in 2014 to share my love of movies and give a perspective I haven't yet seen represented. I'm also an editor at The New York Times, a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, and a member of the Online Film Critics Society. It all culminates in one of the worst endings of the whole Conjuring Universe to date. One that has the movie feel like a waste of time and makes characters like the Warrens look like idiots. The film then shifts focus to their young daughter Judy who appears to have the same gift as her mother.

Unexpectedly, Mary Ellen’s friend Daniela shows up on the pretext of joining Judy’s birthday celebration, although she’s really pursuing her own agenda. Still grieving over the recent death of her father in a traffic accident, Daniela has come seeking spiritual reconnection with her dad, convinced that the Warrens’ paranormal expertise can provide guidance. She attempts to interpret their work by sneaking into the locked artifacts room after stealing the key from Ed’s study and proceeds to examine closely and even touch many of the tainted objects stored there for safekeeping. The picture just rehashes the same stuff this series has already done multiple times before.

I think this third Annabelle movie was trying to keep the cycle of Conjuverse going, and somehow, it successfully did. The attention to detail through design, the cinematography, and the film score makes the movie look and feels very much retro, and the effort with it, is paid-off. It also emphasize the theme about facing-your-fears, the compassion of friendship, and the subtle message of obidience. However, this sort of emphasis makes the natural essence of turmoil within the movie's concept blurry, unheavy and inconsequential.

Oddly enough, perhaps what works best in this film is the likability factor. Again, there’s an innocence here that’s most welcome and unexpected. Unlike a lot of contemporary horror films, “Annabelle Comes Home” doesn’t rely upon relentless gore and shock tactics to prove its worth. In fact, I’ve seen PG-13 rated horror movies that were more extreme.

Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target—the Warrens’ ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends. Madison Iseman) and; Daniela , Mary Ellen’s friend who wants to use the mystic air of the Warren’s home, namely their demon room, to make contact with her deceased father – his death she blames on herself. All three actresses turn in solid work and have loving, playful chemistry, but aside from Daniela messing around in the artifact room, where she unlocks the creepy Annabelle, they don’t have much to do except exist the house. There’s a routineness to what they’re doing, whether it’s baking a cake or hanging out in the backyard, that bogs down the movie and begs the question of what is even meant to be going on and when it’s all supposed to happen. These moments can be funny, in fact making it the funniest movie in the series, but I found it easy to forget I was watching a horror movie after a certain point.

As in previous Conjuring films, the best scares are the subtle ones that build in layers of increasing dread, while the CGI terrors are bigger, but not necessarily better. My favorite scare is a seemingly innocent object that you realize is going to be bad news later on and when it pays off, you’re not sure if you should laugh or hide. This clear-cut plotting is welcome in a franchise where I'm still wondering why anyone thought this doll was a totally normal thing to make or own in the first place. And remember how in Cabin in the Woods, the basement was also full of haunted things just waiting to be activated? Thanks to Annabelle's beacon status, this film is like that if the characters had managed to activate all of them at once.

It’s embarrassingly backwards and makes the whole film feel disjointed. Like a queen installed upon her throne, the Warrens place Annabelle on a chair inside a locked glass cabinet as the centerpiece of their collection, followed by the local parish priest’s recitation of protective blessings and the sprinkling of holy water.

The religious rite seems to immobilize Annabelle for about a year, before an uninvited visitor disrupts the enforced calm of the artifacts room. Things start to go sideways on the evening that the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter Judy plans to celebrate her birthday early with teen babysitter Mary Ellen while her parents are out of town on a case. “Annabelle Comes Home” is a slight step up thanks to its better realized place within the franchise and closer connection to the two main Conjuring films.

Parents need to know that Annabelle Comes Home is the third Annabelle movie and the seventh film in The Conjuring horror franchise. While the movie isn't especially original, it's well-made and has plenty of intense scares. Expect lots of scary ghosts, demons, and monsters, as well as very spooky sounds and music. One creature wields a knife while wearing a bloody dress, and another has a bloody face. There's a stabbing in the stomach, and a scene of a ghost "vomiting" a stream of blood into a character's face.

Centered on the writings and experiences of renowned paranormal investigator Ed Warren and his clairvoyant wife Lorraine , the films’ grounding in allegedly real hauntings has been fundamental to their enormous appeal for horror fans. That impressive track record can certainly be attributed in part to the dedicated involvement of producer and originalConjuring director James Wan, who along with Peter Safran has provided consistent creative vision at the rate of almost one release a year since 2013. Once it all ramps up, however, there are some genuinely creative and beautifully shot scares.
